Soccer fans from all over the world are invited to come watch their favorite teams battle it out at the National Mall. Framed by the white marble of the Capitol, the FIFA Fan Zone, hosted by Freedom 250, offers games on the big screen throughout the tournament that runs until July 19.

Keith Krach, the CEO of Freedom 250, spoke with Washington Examiner about how he feels this is the perfect launchpad for the international community to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

“Everybody’s coming from all over the world,” Krach told the Washington Examiner. “Freedom 250 is all about bringing Americans together, and also our friends and our allies. If we think about it, there’s nothing more united than sports.”

Many fans agreed it goes beyond just watching a game on the jumbotron. Being surrounded by other people creates a sense of community, whether or not they’re rooting for the same team.

“It actually gave us the opportunity to celebrate with other fans,” said David, a fan visiting from Baltimore. “To enjoy the World Cup with everybody.”

“It’s a great atmosphere, everyone is happy here,” said Ayoubi, a fan visiting from Morocco. “You get to know people from all around the world, so it’s good.”

Another bonus is the event is free to enter. Michelle, who was visiting from West Virginia, told the Washington Examinerit’s a great way to get the fan experience, even if people cannot attend a game in person.

“Even though we can’t go to an actual game, like, it’s still really cool to have a huge screen up there,” Michelle said. “I just really love the culture and the people who get together.”

The Fan Zone is situated on the National Mall, allowing people to explore the nation’s capital in between games. Visitors can attend events celebrating America’s 250th birthday from the upcoming Great American State Fair to Washington, D.C.’s annual Independence Day celebration.

“It’s going to be a mixture of entertainment, dance, music, incredible speech, incredible people. So we got something for everybody, and each day is a different theme,” Krach said. “Don’t forget to take maybe a moment to reflect on how grateful you should be for living in this amazing country.”
